Hinting videos for Quicktime servers

Hinting videos for Quicktime servers

Movies that are intended for streaming using QuickTime Streaming Server must be hinted. They need a hint track for both video and audio tracks. The hint tracks tell the server exactly how to package the media data for the network.

You will need:

To hint the video file:

  • Open the video file in Quicktime Pro.
If the movie is not already self-contained, glaucoma choose Save As and save it as a self-contained movie—otherwise, the hinted movie will contain references to the media tracks in the original movie, which would also have to be on the server.
  • Select Export from the File menu
  • Simplest option is to select Movie to Hinted Movie
You may need to experiement with additional options/settings for the video you are exporting

If the video file isn’t in a quicktime format (eg isn’t mpeg4 or h264) or you need to adjust video compression and other settings for the video, then:

  • Select Movie to Quicktime Movie from the drop-down instead
  • Click Options
  • Choose the video size, compression and other settings. Suggested settings:
  • Video Size: 640×480
  • Compression: H.264
  • Quality High
  • Key frame rate: 30
  • Bitrate: 300-400 kbits/sec

For the sound settings, suggested settings:

  • Format: AAC
  • Sample rate: 44.100 kHz
  • Channels: Stereo
  • Bitrate: 128 kbps

  • Check the Prepare for Internet Streaming box
  • Choose Hinted Streaming from the pop-up menu.

And finally

  • Click the Settings button next to Hinted Streaming
  • Uncheck the option Make sure Optimize Hints for Server (unless you are planning to broadcast to a large number of viewers). Selecting this option will make the file almost twice the size.

Quicktime Pro will then export the file, if this is a large file, this may take a long time. Once the export is complete. You can re-open the file in Quicktime and Choose Window and Click Show Movie Properties. Check the hinted tracks are saved, you should see four tracks (video and audio tracks and then hinted video and audio tracks).

If all looks good, its time to upload the video to the server and then add the video to online playlist.
